TERMINOLOGY
In-roadway warning light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk systems are an integral component to traffic calming methodologies. In this industry there are a number of terms, acronyms, abbreviations, and words that have specific meaning to illuminated pedestrian crosswalk systems.

- Automatic Activation Bollard - A vertical cylinder that hold sensor devices that cause the LED Lights in a Smart Crosswalk™ system to signal.
- Base Plate - These items securely hold the LED signal module and are embedded into the roadway.
- Bollard - A bollard is a short vertical post, originally it only meant a post used on a quay for mooring, the word now also describes a variety of structures to control or direct road traffic.
- Dove Prism - Patent pending technology now offered in our signal head modules using a “prism” inserted in in front of the LED lamps.
- Enlighten 1™ - Is a trade name referring to the flashing light rate pulsated by LightGuard LED lights.
- FHWA - Federal Highway Administration
- Illuminated Pedestrian Crosswalk - Refers to crosswalks that have LED enhanced in-pavement signal lights.
- In-Pavement Signal Light - LED enhanced lights embedded in the roadway.
- IRWL - In-Roadway Warning Lights
- ISAD - In-surface activation device, a LightGuard proprietary product used when sharp right turns at a crosswalk prevent the installation of an automatic activation bollard.
- LED - Light emitting diodes.
- LED Enhanced Signs - Signs that have attached LED lights.
- MUTCD - Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices - authored by the FHWA as guidelines for traffic controls.
- PCU - Power Control Unit, this refers to the activation control units for our LED signaling systems.
- Push Button - Refers to manual activation devices, usually found on a pole or bollard at the crosswalk entrance zone.
- RAD - Remote Activation Device, an infrared light beam that when broken sends a call signal to a LED signaling system.
- Red Light Running -
These are attempts by motorists to race to a signalized intersection and typically they fail to stop at a red light.
- Signal Head Module - This is the housing for solid state electronic holding the LED laps and dove prism lense.
- Traffic Calming - This the slowing or reduction of motor-vehicle traffic to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists and improve the environment for residents.
- Zone of Convergence - This is an area 200' - 400' in advance of a Smart Crosswalk™ system where the Enlighten 1™ LED light beams from the in-pavement signal lights merge at the eye level of the approaching motorist.
